Dungeon Masters - Do’s & Don’ts

We all fall into bad habits, and if you've ever found yourself lost in monster stats while your players decide on their next move, then this article is for you. Here are some tips to avoid common pitfalls and make your Dungeons and Dragons games even more enjoyable.

DO listen. It can be tempting to focus on your notes, but make sure you listen to your players to avoid missing important details. Great prep is crucial, so have all your notes ready beforehand. If you need to take a moment to write something down, ask your players to hold off until you're ready.

DON'T forget to play all your NPCs. It can be tough to keep track of numerous non-player characters, so write their names down and tick them off when they speak.

DO encourage roleplaying. For new players, the idea of speaking in character can be daunting. Take it slow and lead by example. Don't go overboard with silly voices, but set the tone and let players gradually become more comfortable.

DON'T leave anyone out. Every group has someone who's less involved, so ask them questions and keep them engaged. Make sure everyone has a chance to contribute and feel included.

DO keep it fun. Remember that the most important rule is to have fun. If the game starts to feel stale, add some humor or improvisation to keep things interesting.

DON'T stay in your seat. Get up and get animated! As a DM, you have the power to create suspense and excitement simply by being expressive. Stand tall and let your body language add to the scene.

DO let your players build the story. Don't try to control every aspect of the game. Instead, use story prompts to help guide the narrative. You can find plenty of prompts online, including on Kickstarter and Amazon.

By following these tips, you can create a more enjoyable and immersive Dungeons and Dragons experience for everyone at the table.
