The town of Daggerpoint is the furthest point north in the Empire.

Yes, north of Othus’ Wall which, theoretically, separates the Northlands from the Valerian Empire. North even of the trading town of Haftton and Fort Blade.

Owned largely by the Empire (save for a few raids from Northern Warchiefs) since the repelling of Yngvar the Thorn’s invasion several millennia ago, life in Daggerpoint was idyllic, if a little boring. Until recently. Its crumbling walls, lack of trained warriors, primitive buildings, and coffers drained by bickering, small-town bureaucrats have attracted the attention of Ivar Sheer, self-proclaimed King of Northmen, who wishes to see his Kingdom spread south. The town of Daggerpoint is in danger, and needs heroes.

Instead, it will be receiving you.

Yes, you. You who owe The Old Anvil (a notorious crime boss) a debt that can only be repaid with masses of gold or your life. You who have been tasked to take on the guise of an Imperial soldier, and with the aid of the Anvilmen’s considerable resources save the town of Daggerpoint from being annexed by an army of Northmen. Perhaps you owe him a massive amount of money, perhaps you thought you could skim a little off the top of his businesses for yourself, or perhaps you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Whatever the case, returning to Imperial lands having ceded the town to the Northmen is not an option. The Old Anvil has his Hammers everywhere, always waiting to strike at those who disappoint him, and they are unmerciful.

Abandon your post, and the Old Anvil will be unforgiving. Fail to defend the town, and die with its inhabitants. Succeed, however, and have your debt cleared, as well as a considerable reward from the Old Anvil himself, who repays his debts tenfold.

Daggerpoint is a 5th edition campaign for players both experienced and new, starting at level two. It will be roleplay heavy, with an open-ended sandbox in the treacherous Northlands beyond Othus’ Wall. There will also be plenty of opportunities for varied and interesting combat scenarios, with players being able to use their own abilities as well as (eventually) commanding troops. It will also involve elements of base building and tower defense, utilising an adapted ruleset from Matthew Colville’s sourcebook Strongholds and Followers. This will allow the players to make important and lasting decisions about building up the town and training followers, all of which will have an associated cost in gold, time, and consequences both in and out of combat. This adapted ruleset will determine how the town of Daggerpoint changes as the campaign progresses: perhaps by the end the town will be encircled in a wall to rival Othus' Wall, or have a network of tunnels beneath it, or be built up into a motte and bailey surrounded by palisade walls. Perhaps the town will be defended only by a skeleton crew of naive, provincial guardsmen, or by a cadre of the finest soldiers the Empire can offer. The first arc of the campaign will take players to level six, with an option to continue after into a larger campaign.

The campaign will be played online, using Roll20 for maps and tokens and the Rolldark Discord for voice chat.

The campaign will have a mysterious, borderline grimdark tone, with tough choices around every corner. The players will be forced to juggle their debt to a crimelord, their fight against a powerful, mounting threat, and their management of the people of this small town under siege.
